Gabe took Ellis down to look at the dogs outside the dog park near our house on Saturday. One of the pups ran right up to Ellis (on the other side of the fence) and Ellis said, "Hi puppy! Jesus loves you." She's never said that to us, by the way. :)
I snagged a little tricycle in PERFECT condition from our neighbors trash yesterday and brought it home for Ellis. When I walked in the door with it she exclaimed, "A motorcyle!!"
While I was at work on Saturday, Gabe asked Ellis if she knew where I was. She said, "Mama's at work. She's probably tired." What does that say about me?
We had dinner at our good friends, the Stivers' house the other night. They have two dachshunds and a bull dog (Ellie) with a very charming under-bite. Ellie came to greet Ellis and Ellis said, "She's kinda pretty."
While Ellis and I were at Target the other day, she began telling me not to scare her (she's been saying this to us lately---not sure why, it's not like we ever try to scare her). This then turned into, "Don't scare my cheeks, Mama." "Don't scare my fingers, Mama." "Don't scare my feet."
I put this one on Facebook, but in case you're not a Facebooker, here's another little Ellis quote. Ellis was painting at the kitchen table last week and was nearly done with her masterpiece. I began to wipe up the paint on the table while she was finishing and she said, "Knock it off, Mom." (!!!!) The night before Gabe was tickling her and I told her to tell him to knock it off. That came back to bite me.
This was also on Facebook, but the other morning Ellis kept insisting I spit out my teeth. She was a little frustrated when I didn't do it.
I've got some pictures which I'll try to upload today or tomorrow. She's really shot up lately so all of her pants are now a bit cropped.

'That's Ellis, okay?'
As I'm strapping Ellis (gently) into her car seat:
Ellis: You're hurting me, Mom.
Me: How am I hurting you?
Ellis: You're hurting me. Tell me 'I'm sorry,' Mom.
Me: I'm sorry if I was hurting you, Ellis. :)
--------------
Ellis from the backseat: I'm so happy. Did you know that?
--------------
While I was on the massage table at the chiropractor, Ellis was standing on the floor next to me. She was holding her juice.
Ellis: Take a sip, Mom. (For some reason I'm now called 'Mom' a lot)
Me: I can't while I'm lying down, but thanks.
Ellis: Then get up, Mom.
---------------
On our last trip to Lowe's, Ellis got to meet a little puppy named Mac. As we were getting her strapped into the cart, a man was doing the same with his puppy in the cart next to us. He let Ellis pet Mac and stare at him for a minute. Ellis hid her excitement very well, but then wouldn't stop bringing it up the entire time we were at the store. She loves her some puppies.
She and I stopped at Lowe's again today. As I was strapping her into the cart she said , "A puppy named Mac? Remember?" I didn't at first, but after she repeated it a couple of times (it takes me awhile sometimes) I remembered what she was talking about.
----------------
Gabe: What's that a picture of, Ellis? (a helicopter)
Ellis: A plane!
Gabe: Actually, it's a helicopter.
Ellis: It's a plane, you silly goose.
---------------
Ellis still scrambles to get her babies when I come in to get her up in the morning, except now more than saying "I gotda babies!" she says, "That was a loooong nap!"
---------------
Ellis: Mom.
Me: El.
Ellis: That's (meaning 'it's') Ellis, okay?
Sorry, ELLIS.
--------------
After being shown the skeleton at the chiropractor, Ellis stared at it silently for quite awhile trying to figure out what to make of it. After her long contemplation she suddenly yelled, "That skeleton has TEETH!" Yes, it does.
Ellis: You're hurting me, Mom.

Lately
Lately we've been retraining Ellis to say she's two, since in a mere 8 hours and 15 minutes, it will be TRUE!!! So here is your last Ellis as a one-year-old-update:
She's crazy. In a good way. And typically it coincides with her dad's presence.

She's calm. In a good way. This more often coincides with my presence.

She's funny. Almost always. And she'll tell you so, too: "Ellis is funny!"
Here's the before shot of our kitchen wall that Gabe and I got all DIY on (nothing to do with Ellis other than the fact that she also had to breath in too much "construction" dust during the process).

And after:

I love how it turned out!
And here is how I find Ellis' babies, Cosette and Daisy, every morning when I come in to get her up. They start out in the crib, but always end up wedged in between the wall and the crib. :)

Another example of the special treatment they receive from Ellis:

Play-Dough is a favorite activity lately. When asked, "What are you making, Ellis?" She often responds, "I'm just makin'."

Her "silly face"---which she developed all on her own:

Still enjoys burying herself with stuffed animals:
I can't believe my little sweetie pie is turning TWO tomorrow!! How did this happen?
Some common quotes these days:
"Upsy down" = upside down
"Pincess" = princess, a term used to describe all girls --- all her.
"Opitus" = octopus
"Downders" = upstairs/downstairs
"Hi-you" = how are you (often followed by thank you when the question is asked back to her)
"Thaz mine" = that's mine----I don't know how this one infiltrated our home, but here it is. Often.
"Gahbeseww" = God bless you.
"Daddy's. Awt. Wook." = Daddy's at work.
"Have fun today!" When I leave for the flower shop on Saturdays.
"Mmmm. That's tasty."
"I wuv a ________ (fill in the blank) (said while tilting head and hugging whatever the object of her love happens to be) ---sticker; bear; tiny speck of play-dough; baby; spoon...there's a lotta love in this house.
Oh! I almost forgot. Ellis got her own mini-person's potty which she peed in once the other morning. I was much more excited than she was, but it's still progress!

Some Ellis-isms
Lately Ellis has become this very empathetic girl---especially with me. She'll come to me after I hiccup, for example and tilt her head and whisper, "Y'Okay, Mama?" or sometimes, while patting me gently, she'll whisper, "S'Okay, Mama. S'Okay, Mama." Very parent-child, but in reverse.
Today she was pushing her cup of juice around in the stroller. She stopped abruptly and the juice fell onto the floor. She rushed around to the fallen juice and whispered, "S'Okay, Juice."
Other notable funnies:
Sporadically yelling, "E!-L!-S! Ellis!" (Trying to spell her name)
"Ellis laughing." Whether she is, or not.
"I keen up." (I'll clean up)
Every morning when I go in to get her once she's woken up, she frantically announces, "I got-da babies! I got-da babies!" Meaning she has both of her baby dolls in her arms and is ready to get out of bed. She used to say, "Good morning, Mama!" Not anymore.
I just finished reading The Help (very good read, by the way). I borrowed it from Gabe's mom, Vickie, once Gabe's sister, Janae was finished with it over Christmas. So Janae was finishing it while we were in the Springs after Christmas. I finished it a couple of weeks later, only reading around Ellis the last day as I was trying to get it finished. So Ellis apparently had seen Janae reading a couple of weeks prior when she saw me reading the book and very matter-of-factly she points to the book and says, "Jonay's book." Then walks away. I was pretty shocked she recognized it and remember Janae reading it. Smarty pants.

18 months!
This photo update is in exact reverse order, starting with last night:
Ellis discovered she is a huge fan of mustard. Huge.

Here she is on her 18 month birthday, doing one of her new favorite things. Running away from me.

Lately she has been all about bringing us books to read to her. She sits and listens very well and turns the pages when it's time.

We had the pleasure of playing with Keri and Amanda and each of their little guys, Nico and Jude (and new little girl, Lucia). Nico took a dip in the kiddie pool and the following diaper resulted...

Jude!

Ellis noticing the full diaper:

A couple of those awkward hold-the-camera-yourself-with-one-hand-while-holding-toddler-in-other-hand pictures:

For a few days in July Ellis sported the Mrs. Brady hair-do:

Now that she can name and locate her elbows, Ellis enjoys folding her arms from time to time. It's pretty cute:

So the 18 month check up went well. Mostly. Ellis seemed to think the doctor's plan was to cause her serious harm and therefore reacted accordingly. Her height measures in the 4th percentile, weight (19lbs.) in the first, head circ. in the 20th. When the nurse -and Gabe and I- were holding Ellis down for her shots she managed to wiggle enough that one of the shots came out before it was complete. The nurse had to leave the room and find out what to do because she said this had never happened to her before. So apparently Ellis still deserves the label her NICU nurses gave her of "tiny, but mighty" :) At the last shot (the re-do to complete the one that she wiggled out of) Ellis quickly began shaking her arms and saying, "All DONE. ALL DONE!" It caused all of us to do that chuckle while frowning you do when something is sad, but also pretty cute. So she survived.
Ellis has managed to pack around 50 words into her budding vernacular. Words she says and understands what she's saying. She constantly says something that makes Gabe or me say to the other, "She just said ________! Did you know she knew that??" Some of her favorites are avocado (aho-caho), thank you (dit-doo), Ellis (Eh-Wis), elbow (eh-bow), fingers (fing-now), cheese, cereal (che-rail), eat (ite), open (oben), no/no way... Often when she can't repeat a word, it comes out sounding an awful lot like "Buttcheese." No joke. Over and over.
She has started to make-believe which is so fun. Just about anything (including her own empty hand) can be a cell phone, which she paces back and forth with talking into. "Heh-WO!...Yeah...Yess...Jiberish...Buh-bye!" She also hands us invisible snacks that we are expected to chew up and say yum to. Her new favorite game is to tell us "Nie-Nie" (which I'm pretty sure we never taught her?) at which point we close our eyes and play the narcoleptic, snoring until she touches our face and says, hello!
Basically, she's a whole lot of fun. :)
