The Blue Germ

A couple of weeks ago, Gabe came into the kitchen and told me to go look at Ellis (in our room).  I go and find her standing in the middle of our bed attempting to put one of my bras on over her dress (if you've read my blog for awhile, you know this is nothing new).  I say something like, "Hi, whatcha doin'?"  Her answer: "Just tryin' out my new boobs."  Ahhhh...I don't know what to say.

---------

Here is a breakdown of the trials we encountered on our trip to Iowa (me and the girls).

May 17th.
Ellis poops her pants three times before we even leave for the airport.  Weird, since she's been completely potty-trained for, I don't know, like a year? Lightheartedly say to Gabe, better here than at the airport...

Get to Denver Airport and it happens two more times.  Except now I'm a single parent and also have a screaming infant in a stroller.

I throw both of those undies in the trash and put a diaper on Ellis just before boarding the plane.

**When we touched down in Cedar Rapids, Ellis exclaimed loudly, "We're AT IOWA!! This is SO FUN!!"  Everyone within earshot laughed.  We happened to be on the maiden flight for Frontier from Denver to CR, so when we arrived they shot canons of water at the plane and there was a crowd of reporters photographing our arrival.  We also got a {lame} "goodie" bag as we each stepped off the plane and were also welcomed with a small buffet.  After the poop-filled start to our day, this was a fun turn of events.

May 18th.
I awake around 4 am to the sound of vomit hitting the bed.  Open my eyes and see Ellis (whom I was sharing a bed with) throwing up a foot from my face. I race to the room where my mom was (sort of, sort of not) sleeping. She strips the bed and within the hour I start to get a migraine. Yay. We begin a day of Ellis throwing up pretty constantly until later that afternoon.

May 19th.
Ellis throws up in the kitchen once in the morning and then is fine.

May 20th.
Wake up around 1:30am to the sound of Ellis puking again.  Five or six more times.  I call Gabe and wake him up to tell him it's happening again.  He is nice to me even though I've needlessly woken him up in the middle of the night.  Not for you college kids, but for the rest of us, it was the middle of the night.  In my sleep-starved state I begin to enter a very paranoid state where my brain is imagining the worst-case scenarios in which Maci gets sick and dehydrated along with Ellis while we're out of town away from their doctor and their Dad.  Thankfully, this does not happen.

May 22nd.
At the CR airport waiting to board our plane home.  Literally about fourth in line to board the plane when Ellis says she has to "go" so we rush into the bathroom, but once again, we're too late.  Quickly clean her up and toss her undies in the trash, slap a diaper on her, stick my phone in the stroller, gate check stroller, board plane, remember phone in stroller, rush back to front of plane, too late.  Arrive in Denver, check stroller, phone is gone.  Brilliant.

Now you have the context for the following Ellis quotes to make sense:

"I had a blue germ in my tummy."  On at least one of the kid's shows Ellis watches, they've portrayed germs as these bumbly colorful cartoon blobs.  Apparently Ellis' sickness was caused by the blue one.

I told Ellis I always feel better after a shower when I've been sick.  She agreed, saying, "Yeah, I'm a little dusty.  I need a shower."

I told her how important it was for her body to get good rest in order to get healthy again. To clarify, she asked, "...So I don't have to spit in that bowl anymore?"  Incidentally, don't use the large white bowl at my Granny's house if you want to make cookie dough, or anything else.  Probably safe to say that most of you reading would never bake at my Granny's house, but I'm going to err on the side of full and unnecessary disclosure when I tell you:  don't use that white bowl.

My mom (Grandma Shelly) wanted to give Ellis a dab of (whipped) cream from the can on her finger (not during her vomity days).  Ellis wouldn't let her and had the most perplexed look on her face.  Finally she fled the kitchen and told me "Grandma Shelly wants to put cream on my finger, but I don't have an ow-y."   At our house we call Neosporin cream.

-------

Lately instead of saying, I'm okay or fine or no thank you, Ellis says 'I'm good'.

------

Ellis had her first dance recital last Saturday.  There were about 200 people in attendance. The whole thing was A. Dorable. She did a great job and it turns out I had NO reason to be anxious about her freaking out on stage.  Her class performed first, then another class was up.  The third group was another class taught by Ellis' teacher.  Ellis saw Miss Jen going back on stage so Ellis got up out of her seat and followed them onto the stage.  Another teacher quietly escorted Ellis off the stage.  :)  While she danced I teared up.  Afterward, I told her how proud I was and that I cried a little because I love her so much and was so proud of her.  All week she kept saying, "Mama, why did you cry when I danced??"  Then I would explain again and again. :)

------

MACI
had her 4 month check up today.  She weighs 15 lb. 10.9 ounces.  88th percentile for weight and 83rd for length.    She had some shots and slept most of the day.  This afternoon she was inconsolable for a little while, which has NEVER happened (unless in the car sometimes).  I couldn't put her down without her screaming, and I had to hold her just so or she became incredibly upset. Poor little girl.  Gabe came home from work a little early and we gave her some Tylenol (or whatever it is) and she had a much better evening.  Back to her normal smiley self.  Phew.

"Surprised!"

...What Ellis says when she tries to surprise someone.

----

Driving past a church sign, Gabe reads "Is God testing you?" out loud.
Ellis immediately says, "God doesn't text!"

----

Yesterday, when Ellis was done practicing her bike-riding skills and wanted her helmet off of her head, she asked if I would please take off her "lid".

14 Weeks

Modeling another outfit from my own wardrobe as a baby.

Maybe the happiest baby ever.

Recently taken notice of Ellis and she is a FAN.

Thankfully, it's mutual. In the words of Kai Lan (look it up), these two loving each other  "makes my heart super happy"

Don't feel bad if you're feeling the urge to make some obnoxious baby-talking noise right now.  I struggle  (and fail) at this daily.

Quick Ellis story from last night.  Ellis and Gabe were playing together  and Ellis explains to Gabe the following:

"If you don't think you're a man, you're a woman."

Gabe's response (roughly): "That's not a very positive view of womanhood..."  Never miss a chance to talk to our 3-yr-old about gender theory.  ;)

Ellis,in her most serious tone, point blank:

"Dad.  Are you a man or not?"

Sunday, Muddy Sunday

Okay, it was actually Saturday, but it was full of mud.

Building "worm beds"

Building a raised garden bed.

How do you get a belly covered in mud, you might ask.  There are at least a couple of ways. Ellis opted to  lay down on the worm beds she made.

Done!

Idyllic Day

Ellis learned how to climb up her slide in bare feet last week.  So we spent most of this beautiful day outside in the shade that covers the swingset.  Maci cat-napped (so did Daly), Ellis went up and down the slide and colored in her "tree-house" while I swung and took pictures.

This is how Ellis had to "fix" these paddles.  It was a very intricate process of putting just the right amount of dirt on each little suction cup.  The amount of concentration was pretty amazing.

And she wore an empty backpack all day, too.

This is a tee shirt of mine from when I was a baby.  It says 'I'm Fabulous...Just ask my Grandmom.'

Trip to the Springs

Janae is home from Costa Rica!! We all went down  on Friday when Gabe was done at work.  The plan was to come home Sunday afternoon.  Around 7pm on Sunday, we decided that the girls and I weren't ready to leave yet, so Gabe drove home alone and we stayed until Tuesday.  Great long weekend! (though we all missed Gabe)

Doing this post on Gabe's computer and I don't know how to rotate photos...

At one point I realized no one was with Ellis and I hadn't heard her in a while.  I found her in Grammy's and Grandpa's bed with her books all lined up, "reading" to herself.  I loved finding her this way :)

Maci and Aunt Janae got to meet for the first time this visit.  Clearly Maci welcomed her right in to her circle of trust.

From a couple of weeks ago

Our lilac bush is done blooming now.  Wasn't it pretty?
Maci still LOOOOVES bath time.
Ellis still LOOOOVES Maci.
